What is Jungian Sandplay Therapy?
Jungian Sandplay Therapy is a gentle, non-verbal therapeutic approach that allows individuals to express and explore their inner world through the creation of images in sand. Rooted in the work of Carl Jung and developed by Dora Kalff, it provides a “free and protected space” where the psyche can unfold naturally, without pressure to explain or analyse.
Using a sandtray and a collection of miniature figures—people, animals, objects, and symbols—the client creates a scene that reflects their internal experience. These images often emerge from the unconscious, carrying meanings that may not yet be accessible through words. In this way, Sandplay bypasses intellectual defenses and allows deeper emotional and symbolic material to surface safely.
For children, this process is especially powerful, as play is their natural language. For adults, it offers a pathway back to symbolic thinking and inner healing. Over time, repeated trays can show movement, integration, and transformation within the psyche.
The therapist’s role is not to direct or interpret prematurely, but to witness and hold the space with respect and attunement. Through this process, Jungian Sandplay supports emotional regulation, trauma healing, and the gradual strengthening of the self.
